Are you linked in? Do you have a LinkedIn account? If you publish content of any kind that is important to you or your brand you should. As a matter of fact, if you are a professional of any kind, you should have an account. You can think of it this way: Facebook is your people you know network, Twitter is your be heard network, and LinkedIn is your professional network. If you want the right people to see your content it would be a huge mistake to ignore LinkedIn.

The first step is, if you don’t have a LinkedIn account start one right now. After you have an account, continue reading to learn a simple 5 step LinkedIn Content Marketing Strategy. On to our first step: Join Relevant LinkedIn Groups.

Join Relevant LinkedIn Groups

LinkedIn groups are a great place to let your voice be heard, engage with others, and make new connections. Which groups should you join? How many? How active should you be? Let’s answer these questions in order.

Which to Join

Which groups you should join depend on what your goals are. What is your niche? Are you a photographer? A marketer? Are you a local small business? A leadership guru? Whatever your forte, you should join groups relevant to that.

How Many to Join

This one is a very important question. The more groups you join and are active with the more exposure you and your work will have. On the other hand, if you join too many you wont be able to be very active in any of them. I would say a safe approach would be to just join a hand full, say 5 just for an easy round number, and go on from there. If you can handle being active in more then by all means join more.

How Active

This one is the key. You should be as active as you can. Comment on and thumbs up a few posts by others every week (at least). Post your work (be sure to follow the group rules). Get to know some of the members. You may just find that professional connection you are looking for.

How to Find and Join Groups on LinkedIn

  1. Log into your LinkedIn account.
  2. Click “Groups” located at the top menu of the page.
  3. In the search field you are going to type in your niche and run a search.
  4. In the search results click the name of a groups that you are interested in.
  5. If you like it then click the yellow “Join” button.
  6. Follow the above steps again, this time searching for local groups.

Publish Good Content

Right now content is more important than ever. If you have any interest in good SEO, building your influence, and being found on Google, you must publish plenty of good content. Write your content and publish it to your blog or website (and I would highly recommend that you do have a blog).

Post Your Content to LinkedIn

You want your professional connections to see your rock star content. Post it to LinkedIn. Be proud of your work and let yourself be known in your niche by your connections. Look at it this way, even only 20 connections will likely link you to thousands of professionals. If you want to be seen by the right people then LinkedIn is the place to do it.

Post Your Content to LinkedIn Groups

Remember those groups we talked about a minute ago? Post your content there too. Don’t be spammy and be sure to follow the groups rules.

Engage With Others

Now for a key to the whole thing. If you want others to take you seriously and be engaged, then you have to be engaged with them. Read what your connections and groups you belong to post. Comment and thumbs up where you can. Communicate and show them you are interested. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Show them that you are interested in them and you just may find that they become more interested in you.

  • You are now a member of the largest professional network in the world.
  • You have joined groups that are either interested in or part of your niche or are local to you.
  • You are putting out great content.
  • You are sharing your content with other professionals or potential clients.

To use Twitter as a component of your fancy new social radar system:

  • Follow your customers and prospects.
  • Follow your competitors.
  • Follow similar business to your own.
  • Follow the influencers in your industry.
  • Read your Twitter stream at least once a day (though 2 or 3 times is better).

What does this offer you? A very powerful component in your social radar set up.

Here is what you need to do to make it work:

  1. Go to the Google Alerts Webpage.
  2. Sign into your Google account if you aren’t already logged in. I would advise you to use quotation marks to make your search an exact search.
  3. Type in what you want to monitor in the Search Query box.
  4. In the Result Type drop down menu choose what type of results you are looking for. Usually I would recommend to choose everything.
  5. Choose how often you want to receive results.
  6. Choose All Results in the How Many drop down menu.
  7. Choose to either send your results to your Gmail inbox or a news feed.

Google Reader

Google Reader

Yes Google has done it again with yet another rock star tool. With Google Reader you can follow all of the blogs and feeds you read in one place. Talk about convenience and a time saver. Keep up with industry and competitor news as well as important news from your industry.

Just follow these steps to get started:

  1. Go to the Google Reader site.
  2. Sign into your Google account if you aren’t already logged in.
  3. Click the Subscribe button.
  4. Enter the URL of the feed or blog you want to follow.
  5. Click Add.

Facebook Page

Create a Facebook Page and you will have an amazing social center for you and your target market.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to the SocialMention website.
  2. Type in your search in quotes to get an exact search.
  3. Enjoy the results.

Yes it is that simple. Not every result will be relevant but you should get pretty useful information. Also, check out all the features of the site. Explore and you just may be impressed.

In my opinion one of the best general news pages available. Go to the site and enter whatever it is you are searching for, and that includes you, your competitors, industry, and products. It gives you a list of news stories bout your search. On the results page it even gives you the option to add a section for the specific search on your Google News homepage.

Here is my routine:

  • Check out the top stories.
  • Search for and check out specific topics.
  • Check out both Business and Technology on the navigation on the left.

That is just what I do. Your interests may be different, don’t ignore this powerful tool.

Yelp is like a very popular yellow pages that allows users to review businesses. With millions of unique monthly users it is definitely not something to be ignored.


This is the most important part of your social media radar system. Talk to your customers. Listen to them. Pay attention to their concerns. Answer their questions. Get to know them on Facebook. Be social with them in your shop. They are the most important people in the world to your business and they are the most powerful tool that you have in your social arsenal.

Design Your Own Facebook Page Step by Step

Facebook, Like, Page

The world has gone social. This is true whether you are talking about the Web, how you interact with companies, or how you find information. Marketing your business is no different. People crave the social, they seek connection. All of this boils down to one word: relationship. Right now, and no doubt for the foreseeable future, Facebook is at the center of this social universe.

Facebook is without a doubt where the overwhelming majority of your target market is. They share, play games, and post things that are meaningful to them or that make them laugh. If this is where your market is spending its time, then this is also where you should be spending your time. Be where the market is.

I am going to walk you through how to put up a Facebook Page and offer some tips to make it work for your brand.

Set Up Your Facebook Page

  1. Go to Facebook Pages.
  2. Sign in.
  3. Click the Create a Page button.
  4. Click the box most relevant to you.
  5. Fill out the short form.
  6. Put a check next to “I agree”.
  7. Click the Get Started button.
  8. Put up a picture. I would recommend your logo. Other choices could be a picture of you and your team or good head shot.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Add a good description of your product or service.
  11. Add other social media sites and your Website.
  12. Add what type of place this is.
  13. Answer what the page represents.
  14. On Enable Ads click Skip. The reason is ads will cost you money and we are just setting up your page at the moment. You can make your decision on Facebook Ads later.

You now have a basic and very empty Facebook Page of your own. Now let’s make it your own.

Make Your Facebook Page Your Own

  1. Click Like. If you don’t like your Page why would you expect anyone else to?
  2. Upload a cover image for your page. Take your time on this one. People like the visual and you want it to look good.
  3. Click About and make sure all information is filled out.
  4. At the top of the page click Edit Page and then Update Info.
  5. Fill out all the information.
  6. Click Save Changes.
  7. Click View Page.

Set Up Your Page Management

  1. Click Edit Page and then Manage Permissions.
  2. Make any changes you want if any.
  3. Click Save Changes.
  4. Click View Page.
  5. Click Edit Page and then Admin Roles.
  6. Add other admins if you wish and clock Save.
  7. Click View Page.
  8. Click Edit Page and then Manage Notifications.
  9. Make your Selections and click Save Changes.
  10. Click view page.

Now you have your very own Facebook Page that is set up and ready to use. Now what? I will close this post with some tips and a very important question.


  • Add content. You should post to your page at least once a day, Don’t become a spammer but be sure to post consistently.
  • Along with text and links also post images and videos. Always remember, people love the visual.
  • Add Milestones.
  • Keep your posts to no more than 100 characters.
  • Use the Question feature to ask questions.
  • Share your Page on your Timeline.
  • Under Build an Audience send a request to your friends to like your Page.
  • Email an invite to your Page to your contacts.
  • Announce your Page on your other social media accounts.
  • Announce your Page on your business cards and newsletter.
  • Have fun and be fun with it. People like fun and interesting. If you are neither they will not be interested.

4 Things Google+ Can Do for You


I can hear you now. “But everyone I know uses Facebook, why should I spend time using Google+ when I don’t really know anyone on there?” Good question, and I hope to provide you with some good answers. I am going to show you why you should implement a Google+ strategy and some of the ways that it can benefit you and your brand.

To answer the question proposed in the last paragraph:

  1. You don’t know anyone on Google+ yet.
  2. Your friends and customers may not be on Google+ yet.

Yet is the operative word. Google+ is continuously introducing new quality features, it is gaining popularity, and it is the only current social network that I currently see out there that is positioning itself in such a way to be a serious future contender against Facebook. Google+ is great for SEO. Finally, Google (the world’s number 1 search engine) loves and shows favor to Google+. This leads us to the inevitable question: What can Google+ do for you?

Let’s face it, Facebook and Twitter are essential to marketing efforts. To ignore them  would be  a mistake of epic proportions. The trouble is that both Facebook and Twitter restrict Google from accessing much of their data. This limits their SEO effectiveness. With Google+ on the other hand, it is the number one search provider in the world (aka Google) that owns the network. Not only that, Google does access the data on Google+ and shows favor to it. Google+ brings with it natural SEO.

Meeting True Influencers


Most of the big players in marketing, industry, and business in general are also on Google+. Why is it important to get to know the major hitters? It is important because they have the expertise, connections, and are a wealth of information. They can be learned from. One really nice thing in the whole deal is that many of them will even communicate with you when you comment or message them, if you also provide decent content and construct good comments and messages.

The truth be told, more exposure can never hurt and can only help you.If you are wise, you are claiming your territory wherever you can. It costs nothing. It takes very little effort to just sign up. I honestly do believe that in the future Google+ has the potential to very well be a serious contender against Facebook. Will it surpass Facebook and replace it as the dominant social network. I don’t know. It it possible? I would say it is in the realm of possibility. Just look at what Facebook did to MySpace. Whether it ever surpasses Facebook or not though, it does appear that Google+ is going to continue to grow and thrive. Now is the time to get your foot in that door. Getting there before your competition is the only smart thing to do.

My best advice to you is to get started with Google+ now. Facebook and Twitter may be the kings but it would be a terrible mistake to ignore the opportunities that Google+ offers you.

An influencer is a person or thing which influences. They can be top experts, the very popular, those in top leadership positions, those whose voice is heard by the masses, etc. One cool fact is that for the most part you can find them on Twitter. You can read what they have to say, share your posts with them, and even communicate with them. Twitter is one of the easiest ways to meet them.

To meet influencers:

  • Use Twitter search to find them. You can search by name or even search the name of your industry or location to see what comes up.
  • Browse to them through Twitter categories.
  • Check out who your followers and those you follow are following.

Power of a Listening Post

You can’t expect to be a great communicator without being a great listener. You can’t hope to be a good leader without being a good listener. You can’t be an amazing marketer without being an amazing listener. Listening is half of the equation whether you are talking about communication, leadership, or marketing. Consider Twitter a very powerful extra set of ears.

To use Twitter as a listening post:

  • Follow the competition. By following your competitors you can see what they are up to. You will know what ways they are reaching out to customer’s and collaborators that you want for your organization or brand. You may even learn a lesson or two about what is or isn’t working for them and apply it to your business.
  • Follow those you do business with and your Facebook followers. Following them opens yet another communication channel. It shows them that you are interested in what they have to say. It also provides yet another marketing channel to them.
  • Follow relevant blogs. Blogs can be some of the best free information and even education you will find. They can inform, inspire, and even provide step by step instructions on how to do almost anything. Bloggers can also be powerful influencers and connectors.
  • Follow local businesses. Forming relationship with local business’ can provide local connections, opportunity for community involvement, and may lead to future clients.
  • Follow local news. By following news sources you can keep up with current events, be in touch with what is effecting the lives of your customers, and keep tabs on what is happening in society that may have an impact on your brand.

Power to Grow a Following

The bigger your following the bigger your net of sources of information, influencers and connectors, connections, and potential clientele.

To grow your following:

  • Follow others.
  • Tweet regular original content.
  • Interact with others.
  • Promote your Twitter account.
